Comics for Noobs: Invincible
April 15th, 2010 by Samodean

Invincible is a total blast. Created by Robert Kirkman in 2003, it is one of the titles responsible for revitalizing Image Comics.
Imagine you’re Superman’s son. What would you do? Fallow in Dad’s footsteps, of course. Mark Grayson is a young teenage hero trying to make his mark in a world filled with superheros and supervillains. He’s got the power, but is he up to the task?
Invincible is just tons of fun. Each issue is packed with action, but it also doesn’t take itself too seriously. Comic fans will pick up on little in-jokes in just about every issue. Comic Noobs will be able to pick it up and enjoy it for what it’s worth.
The writing is solid, the characters are fun and unique, even the joke, rip-off characters. The art is simple, but still detailed and vibrant. More importantly, the panels are well laid-out and easy to follow, which is important for new readers.
There are tons of Trade Paperbacks out there, even super-sized hardcover Ultimate Collections. The early issues are TONS of fun, and give one of the greatest plot twists of the past decade.
For those that DON’T want to read 70 issues of backstory, last week marked the release of Invincible Returns, a one-shot that does a great job recapping the previous storylines, and setting up the world of Invincible for what’s to come. Pick this one up, and you’ll be primed and ready for next month’s Invincible #71.
One thing that sets Invincible apart from other series for Comic Noobs is the setting. While Invincible exists within Image’s continuity, that universe is nowhere near as large as Marvel’s or DC’s. It’s a great place to get into reading comics.
