Comics for Noobs: A Change of Direction
April 14th, 2010 by Samodean
So, a while back I came up with a great idea, Comics for Noobs. It was my way to get some new fans into the medium, and it was mildly successful for its first few installments.
However, in the time since, I have realized several things.
First of all, these things take a frakking long time to write. Tracking down the images, getting my sources right and making sure the information is still noob-friendly meant every post took me several days to compile. It’s not that I don’t mind the time investment, in the end I was happy with the result. However, I would really like to take that time and focus it on other areas, most notably my fiction writing. Corrigan has a ton of story left to tell, and I’d really like to get those posts out in a more timely manner.
Secondly, I’ve definitely bitten off more than I can chew. Comics are constantly changing, that’s part of the fun. Unfortunately, that means my posts would have to be constantly changing. With twenty or thirty planned characters to focus on, this would have become a full-time job. As it stands now, three of the four initial posts need to be updated with new starting points.
So, where does that leave us?
I’m not cancelling the series. I’m just changing the way I handle it.
From now on, whenever I find a good story for a Comic Noob, either as individual issue or trade paperback, I’ll write a small article about it, recommending it for readers.
I hope this change works out better for everyone.
That said, I still want questions! Contact me if there is any help I can provide to a new reader. See something in a store and want to know more about it? Ask! Read an article online and think a specific character is interesting, but don’t know where to start? Ask! I have a few questions from way back when that I intended to answer after a couple more of the old articles, and I’ll be getting to those very soon.
In the end, this is a service I’m offering to the community, and I know at least some of my readers appreciate what I’ve done so far. I’m here for you, so feel free to share any thoughts on the matter.
