Announcing the Nerd Nation
February 24th, 2010 by Samodean

Forget “announcing.”

I’m DECLARING the Nerd Nation.

First of all, what makes a nerd? For years, that term has been a derogatory name for the “smart kids.” However, relative intelligence is irrelevant. A nerd is someone who is overly dedicated to a part of society that is contrary to cultural standards.

Constantly studying and working in school? Yep, you’re a nerd, but it’s not a bad thing.

Watching football doesn’t make you a nerd. Knowing Braylon Edwards’ YAC average per game over the last 3 seasons does.

Playing video games doesn’t make you a nerd. Knowing how many points of damage the Battle Rifle does in Halo 3 does.

Watching movies doesn’t make you a nerd. Being able to recite the cast and crew of The Departed, complete with award nominations does.

Reading comics… well… yeah, you’re a nerd no matter what.

We nerds are a strange lot. Somebody that plays World of Warcraft 30 hours a week will look down on someone that collects Spider-Man comics. Some nerds hide their passion from others, embarrassed to reveal their true nature.

Well, no more. It’s time for all nerds to band together. Show your pride.

See that big-ass picture on the right side of the page? Yeah, I’m not scared.

Feel free to show your own support:

Nerd Nation

300x300

Nerd Nation

200 x 200

Nerd Nation

150 x 150

Nerd Nation

100 x 100

I ask you, Nerd Nation, spread the word. I’m not afraid. Everyone knows that I’m a Massive Nerd.

I promise I will be a benevolent ruler.

(Okay, honestly, I just thought “Nerd Nation” sounded cool and wanted to do something with it. It’s a theme I will be using for several upcoming projects.)

I always get my feathers a little ruffled by declarations of who and what is or is not a nerd. I consider myself a nerdy or geeky type (before it was cool to do so) but according to many people I am not “nerdy enough” to be in with the cool kid nerds.

I’m not trying to blame you or take it out on you but I just had to comment. “Doing such and such doesn’t make you a nerd, only doing it to this set degree does” is an unfair statement I think. Anyway just putting that out there.

Oh, come on now. I know you’ve been reading my work long enough to know that I don’t take anything seriously. It’s ALL in good fun.

Though, I will admit, after several hours working on that kindergarten art project up there, my brain was probably too fried to write the post the way I had intended.

I was not trying to define anything, it’s pointless. The point I was trying to make is that it’s all about PASSION. It’s not about what you do, it’s about how you do it. If you care enough about what you do, you’re a “nerd.”

We all are, one way or another.

For example, comic books. I don’t know anyone that reads comics just because they’re bored and looking for something to do. They truly enjoy the stories and characters. EVERYONE that reads Marvel books has an opinion about who should be the real Captain America. It’s that love that makes them “nerds,” not the fact that they buy books about guys running around with their underwear on the outside.

Relax, it’s just something I’m trying to have fun with. Enough people expressed an interest in the concept that I decided to run with it.

I do appreciate your input, and I honestly couldn’t agree more.
